Notable Recent Changes
The Florida Gators have seen their average odds shift from around 36/1 to 31/1 in the last week. Felipe Franks has shown promise, and some even consider him a darkhorse Heisman contender. The Gators have picked up steam and their odds have followed suit.
Best Value
At 14/1 on Sportsbook, the Ohio State Buckeyes are a steal. Although they lost their head coach and starting quarterback, they always find a way to reload. The roster is deep and their schedule is favorable to make it to the Big Tem championship and College Football Playoff. Although they might not have the talent level of Clemson or Alabama, at 14/1, the Buckeyes are a bargain. If you think they are a title contender, I would jump at these odds while you can
Worst Value
I think the worst bang for your buck right now has to be the Texas Longhorns. The best odds on the Longhorns right now is 25/1 at BetOnline, but the price still seems too low for me to jump on it. The name recognition of Texas alone makes it tough to find value on them regardless of how talented the team is, and this year is no exception. Most pre-season publications have Texas ranked between the 11-20 range, but the average odds for the Longhorns to win the championship are the 7th lowest in the nation. They play LSU early in a non-conference matchup and that could be an early indicator of how serious of a contender the Longhorns actually are. I’m staying away on this one.
Best Longshot
I’m going back to the Big Ten and taking the Michigan St. Spartans as my best longshot pick. They are currently going off at 2,000/1 odds on 5Dimes, 2,000/1! I had to do a double-take when I saw those odds. Considering they are at 150/1 on other books, this seemed too good to be true. Some pre-season publications have listed the Spartans around the top-10, placing them above the Longhorns who are going off at 25-1. Michigan State made the College Football Playoff four seasons ago (ignore the result they had in the playoffs), so the program has proven in the past that they are capable of getting close to the title game. If you’re telling me I can turn $5 into $10,000 profit by betting Michigan St. to win it all, I would say you would have to be crazy not to invest a little on the Spartans.
